01맥일로이의 숨겨진 강점
맥일로이는 목요일 TOUR Championship 첫 라운드에서 2언더 70을 기록했다. 스코어카드만 보면 큰 움직임은 없어 보이지만, 3개의 보기와 5개의 버디로 변동성 있는 라운드였다. 하지만 결과는 29명 필드에서 공동 20위였다.
1라운드 후 맥일로이는 SG: Approach에서 3위, SG: Off-the-Tee에서 2위를 차지했다. BMW Championship에서도 SG: Tee-to-Green에서 5위를 기록했던 맥일로이의 볼 스트라이킹에 주목할 필요가 있다. 페덱스컵 3회 챔피언(2016, 2019, 2022)인 맥일로이의 우승 오즈는 사전에 +900에서 +2150으로 악화됐다.
맥일로이가 우승까지 가지는 못할 수도 있지만, 톱5 피니시 오즈 +255는 충분히 매력적이다. 현재의 드라이브와 아이언 플레이 조합이라면 충분히 뒷라운드에서 상승할 수 있다.

크리스 고터럽은 벨레리브 이후 아이언 플레이 개선이 필요했던 선수다. 현재 +840 오즈로 선두 민우 리와 2타 차다. 1라운드에서 18개 중 15개 그린을 기록했으며, 2026년 3승을 거둔 그는 Tour의 빅게임 헌터가 됐다. 톱5 오즈 +118로도 충분히 백업할 가치가 있다.
콜린 모리카와(+900)와 비크토르 호블란드(+1100)는 1라운드에서 퍼팅 랭킹 1-2위를 차지했다. 둘 다 합쳐 264피트의 퍼트를 성공시켰다. 하지만 두 선수 모두 시즌 내 SG: Putting 상위 60 밖에 있다.
문제는 둘 다 SG: Tee-to-Green에서 각각 20위, 21위로, 특히 short game에서 약하다는 것이다. Andrew Green의 리노베이션 이후 이스트레이크에서는 around-the-green 능력이 최종 리더보드에 큰 영향을 미친다. 모리카와와 호블란드가 앞으로 250피트를 더 성공시키면서 동시에 short game을 개선하기는 어려워 보인다.

ATLANTA – Watch out for Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy was far from making a big move on Thursday at the TOUR Championship, firing a 2-under 70, but the scorecard doesn't always tell the full story. The rollercoaster included three bogeys and five birdies. So why the attention? McIlroy finished the day T20 in a 29-man field.
Following the first round in Atlanta, Rory is ranked third in Strokes Gained: Approach and second in SG: Off-the-Tee. Fresh off a week at the BMW Championship where he finished four rounds ranked fifth in SG: Tee-to-Green, I'm definitely paying attention to his ball-striking. The three-time FedExCup champion (2016, 2019, 2022) has more than doubled his odds to win the tournament. Prior to teeing off in Round 1, McIlroy was +900 at DraftKings Sportsbook and now is +2150 to win.
I'm not sure McIlroy will make it all the way to the winner's circle, but his odds of finishing in the top five are +255. With his current combination of off-the-tee and iron play, I love backing him before Friday's round begins.
Chris Gotterup is a player who needed to improve his iron play after Bellerive. Further up the odds board at +840 and two strokes behind leader, Min Woo Lee, Gotterup hit 15 of 18 greens in Round 1. With three wins to date in 2026, Gotterup has become one of the TOUR's big game hunters. Within striking distance, he is another name to back as a potential winner or a top-five finish (+118).
Collin Morikawa (+900) and Viktor Hovland (+1100) finished Round 1 ranked first and second in SG: Putting. Together, they made 264 feet of putts. Considering both of them fall outside the top 60 on TOUR this season in strokes gained on the greens, I'm staying away from these two at the top of the leaderboard. East Lake has always been a venue where you need a great mix of ball-striking and putting. Hovland and Morikawa were ranked 20th and 21st for SG: Tee-to-Green on Thursday, and both struggled primarily with their short game.
Since Andrew Green's renovation, around-the-green acumen has become a greater influence on the final leaderboard. Asking both of them to hole another 250 feet of putts seems very unlikely alongside an around-the-green deficiency. Winning the TOUR Championship takes a full complement of skills, and even though Hovland and Morikawa are in great position after Round 1, I'll pass on tailing these two until I see a drastic improvement in their short game.
