CROMVOIRT, Netherlands — Lauren Coughlin and Alison Lee both had an answer at the ready for why they made such strong partners during the Saturday morning foursomes session at the Solheim Cup.
“I feel like we're both pretty chill,” Coughlin said at first, but Lee quickly chimed in to expound on that point.
“Exactly what I was going to say,” said Alison, who has represented the U.S. three times in the biennial team competition. “We're both pretty chill, pretty even keel. You don't ever see us get too crazy upset. It's always great to be super pumped up when you're out here, but you also got to keep it respectful at the same time. But, yeah, we're just super chill.
“We were so confident in each other. I had no doubt in my mind Lauren was going to hit a good shot. I hope she feels the same about me, but it was a good matchup.”
Fair assessment from Lee, particularly considering she and Coughlin trounced England’s Charley Hull and Lottie Woad 6 and 5, the largest margin of victory of the week so far at Bernardus Golf and one that matches the record for the largest margin of victory in foursomes in Solheim Cup history.
After tying the first three holes, Coughlin and Lee broke through the stalemate, winning the fourth hole with a par to go 1 up on Hull and Woad. The Americans birdied the par-5 fifth hole to extend their advantage to two and then notched another birdie on the par-3 sixth hole to move to 3 up.
Coughlin and Lee went 4 up on the Englishwomen when they birdied seven, climbing to 5 up after picking up a birdie on the par-5 10th hole. And after the Euros were unable to find any sort of spark that might’ve propelled them to a late-round comeback, Lauren and Alison ultimately closed out the match on 13, winning 6 and 5 to tally another point for the Red, White and Blue.
“Lauren played some incredible golf today,” said Lee. “I felt like all I did was sit in the passenger seat. I just was kind of there and participated when I could. But she made some incredible putts, incredible approaches, especially on the front nine. I feel like if we're playing even, especially on the front, it's so important because you got to try to hit it close and give ourselves some chances at birdies instead of pressing into the back nine. But we had so much fun out there.”
It’s the second match that Coughlin and Lee have won as partners in the Netherlands, as they teamed up in foursomes matches on Friday morning and defeated Nanna Koerstz Madsen and Celine Boutier, 3 and 2. Coughlin’s career Solheim Cup record after the early session on Saturday was 5-0-2, which, at that time, gave her the highest win percentage of any athlete who had played in five or more matches, at 86.7 percent.
Alison’s record since her Solheim Cup debut in 2015 has appreciated to 5-5-0 thus far, further bolstered by the undefeated 3-0-0 performance the 31-year-old has posted this week across the first two days of team play at Bernardus.
Lee sat out on Saturday afternoon while Coughlin teed it up alongside Megan Khang in the fourball session, which makes the 33-year-old the first American since Paula Creamer in 2011 to play all five matches in a Solheim Cup.
The three-time LPGA Tour winner is also the oldest athlete to tee it up in every single match since European Maria Hjorth did so in 2009, and Coughlin is additionally the oldest woman from the United State to compete in all five since Pat Hurst played five at Crooked Stick Golf Club in 2005. Hurst was 36 years old.
“This is the best week we play every two years,” said Coughlin, who made her Solheim Cup debut in her home state in 2024. “It's been electric out here. It's super loud. Wouldn't mind quieting it down just a little bit, but it's been awesome.”
And while they’ve enjoyed competing in the Netherlands this week, the Americans didn’t come here to just participate. There’s still work to be done in the final session and the U.S. Team is here to win, a mindset that Coughlin and Lee have carried with them throughout their time at Bernardus and one that they will work to apply to the Sunday singles, no matter who they are primed to face off against on the last day of the Solheim Cup.
“Just keep fighting. We saw a lot of that yesterday, especially afternoon. And (Saturday), morning, we saw a few matches flip. Hopefully they can flip back,” Lee said. “This afternoon as well. We just need to keep fighting because playing on foreign soil is always difficult. All the crowd is against you but just got to keep pushing on the gas pedal.”
